Where Should Your Focus Lie?

Happy Weekend everyone,

Galatians 5:24-25 says, “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit”. Wow, that’s wonderful, the moment I belong to Christ, I have crucified my flesh and its passions and desires, which means I am perfect in everything thing I do, I walk by the Spirit, I can never walk by the flesh, is it that easy? Yes and no, let’s find out.

A lot of us have thought that the moment we receive Christ our bad habits ends immediately, but that isn’t true in many cases. What really happened was that our Spirit, the source of our existence changed, and the new life is the life of Christ. Our actions serve as the effects of our life, in other words where our heart lies. The parable of two builders which Jesus gave us, one built his house on the rock and the other one built his house on the sand, they both faced the exact challenge, but where the result was based on their foundation, which is where their heart laid. Our lives reflect where our heart is, but how come we still have bad habits?

There was a chain smoker who received Christ into his life, even after receiving Christ as Lord, he always had the urge to smoke, the urge was too much that he kept on smoking, but he wasn’t happy deep down that as a Son of God he was still smoking, he tried and tried to stop, but the more he tried, the more he kept on smoking, what was wrong? The problem he had which he didn’t know was that now that his life had changed, he was not to focus on who he wasn’t any longer, but was to focus on who his was in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21 showed him how he was now the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Now, even though he didn’t know many scriptures, what he knew was that he was the now the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, and he kept on confessing it on and on even though he hadn’t stopped smoking, but as he kept on confessing that, his focus changed and grew without him knowing, guess what happened? Eventually, he just stopped smoking, his actions had started reflecting his new life.

What we need to understand is that we shouldn’t beat ourselves up when we still continue with our old habits, because that isn’t you anymore. What we should do instead is to keep confessing who we are at the moment, which is our new life in Christ Jesus. What many of us don’t know is that to cry over our old habits is focusing on it and not our new nature unknowingly and this is what the devil wants. As Sons of God, our focus and goal changed the moment we received Christ, so even if we still see our old habits still surfaces, we should keep on confessing our new nature, and with time our old habits wear out completely, so we all need to be well grounded in the word.

May the LORD bless you and keep you, make His face shine upon you. May the LORD be gracious to you and lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. AMEN.

Why not accept Jesus today if you haven’t. Pray out loud, “Jesus, I confess that You are my Lord and Saviour. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith in Your Word, I receive salvation now. Thank You for saving me!” Congratulations, you’re born again, you are now brand new!
