The Seeds Amongst Thorns

Few years ago, I had a series on the parable of the sower, and of course I wrote on the seeds amongst thorns. Today, I singled out the seeds amongst thorns, amongst the parable of the sower, as I decided to revisit it again because for me I believe a lot of us fall into this category when we are not careful. And it is a serious issue that I had to call our attention to what the seeds amongst thorns really mean.

The parable of the sower was written in Matthew, Mark and Luke, (ref.: Matthew 13:1-23; Mark 4:1-20; Luke 8:1-15). And as I wrote, my focus is on the seeds amongst thorns. Let's take a look at Matthew 13:3&7, "³Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow.  ⁷And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them." The seeds grew, but the thorns sprang up and choked them. This is to imply that if the thorns weren't there, the seeds would have grown fine. The focus here is to know what these thorns are.

Jesus explained what the parable means and for the seeds amongst thorns, Jesus said in Matthew 13:22 "Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful."

The EASY translation puts Matthew 13:22 thus, "Some seeds fell among thorn bushes . This is like people who hear the message from God. But they have many troubles in their minds. They want to get more money and more things. They think that this will make them happy. So they do not let God's message change them. They are like plants that do not grow well and make new seeds." EASY.

The seeds represents the word of God, while the soil or ground represents the heart of the receiver of the word of God. Some may think the cares of this world and deceitfulness of riches would imply those who spend lavishly, those who sin. But take note, the soil represents the heart,  and the EASY translation made us understand that the thorns Jesus spoke of represents the troubles in our hearts.

Many times we allow bills to trouble us, such as rent, children school fees, what to eat, what to drink, what to wear, worry over our health. We want to get more money for what we term as "justifiable reasons", and in all these we forget the word of God, and to Jesus, we choke the word of God. This is why we don't see God's word manifesting in our lives.

Jesus had asked us to trust in Him completely in Matthew 6:25-34. Jesus also asked us to come to Him when we are heavy laden because He will give us rest.

The question we should ask ourselves is why did Jesus come, and of what use is the word of God when we keep facing worries on this earth?

Jesus came to give us rest. Rest from every worries of life, and we find this rest in His word, which come as seeds. But when we fail to look up to Him and look within our abilities in solving these worries we choke the word we get. And guess what? You can never take your worries away, no matter the billions you are given. Why not give your worries to the only person that can take your worries away permanently. This is the rest Jesus has brought for us.

Jesus said in John 14:16-18, "¹⁶‐¹⁷And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Savior, the Holy Spirit of Truth, who will be to you a friend just like me—and he will never leave you. The world won’t receive him because they can’t see him or know him. But you know him intimately because he remains with you and will live inside you. ¹⁸“I promise that I will never leave you helpless or abandon you as orphans—I will come back to you!" TPT

The Holy Spirit is always there living in every Son and Daughter of God to lead us into a worry free life. Allow the word of the Lord to fall on good soil, a heart that is hungry for the word of God, a heart ready to diligent to follow the word of Truth.

Yes, there are worries and anxieties everywhere, but know this, it is not your job to take your worries away, it is His job, so, rest in Him.

Why not accept Jesus today if you haven’t. Pray out loud, “Jesus, I confess that You are my Lord and Saviour. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith in Your Word, I receive salvation now. Thank You for saving me!” Congratulations, you’re born again, you are now brand new!
