The Parable of The Sower: The Difference Between The Ground of Thorns and The Good Ground

Matthew 13:23 says, “But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, [grasps and comprehends it. AMP] who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” Mark 4:20 says, “But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, [receive and accepts and welcome it. AMP] and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” And last but not the least Luke 8:15 says, “But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience [hold it fast in a just (noble, virtuous) and worthy heart and steadily bring forth fruit with patience. AMP].”

And today I take a look at the ground with thorns and differentiate it with the ground that is good. The Amplified translation of Mark 4:18 and 19 says, “And the ones sown among the thorns are others who hear the Word; then the cares and anxieties of the world and distractions of the age, and the pleasure and delight and false glamour and deceitfulness of riches, and the craving and passionate desire for other things creep in and choke and suffocate the Word, and it becomes fruitless.”

This is how thorns start to appear in a person’s life; he hears the Word, but as he was to properly make use of the Word, all sort of distractions started to surface. Mind you, everyone faces this distractions, but not everyone fall for it. A typical example is Peter who walked on water; the word was “come”, but what distracted him as he walked on water? The waves of the sea, which represents his fears; he placed it above who he was looking at (Jesus) [ref. Matthew 14:25-33]. Also this could be likened to parable of two men who built their houses. On built on the sand and the other on the rock; they both faced the same challenges, but it was the one whose house was on the rock that survived [ref. Matthew 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49].

What’s my point? My point here is that you cannot survive this world with your own ability. We all have challenges, which makes us take bad choices which we feel are right; some choices are made out of fear; problems such as financial issues like rent, school fees, food, clothing, shelter, health and many more. These are all genuine issues, but the truth is as we try to solve these problems with our wisdom, we fail whether in the short or long run. These are the thorns because it can’t be avoided. The question is how do we overcome this?

The only way out is to live another life; the seed which is the Word is like a drug which transforms us to the only Man who went through these problems and overcame them, who is that? Jesus of course! The Word show the mysteries and secrets of how the live in this world. First of all Jesus has walked in this world, the Word shows us the path He took, as the scriptures say in Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  If you are tired of going in circles, facing stress and anxiety, then you will do what the person with the good ground did; when he heard the Word, he took his time to understand or comprehend the Word. He went further by accepting the Word, keeping it, and with perseverance there was breakthrough, fruits of new life, the life of success, prosperity, the life of Jesus Himself. This is the only way out, trust me.

Why not accept Jesus today if you haven’t. Pray out loud, “Jesus, I confess that You are my Lord and Saviour. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith in Your Word, I receive salvation now. Thank You for saving me!” Congratulations, you’re born again, you are now brand new!
