The Parable of The Sower: The Difference Between The Stony Ground And The Good Ground (Part 1)

Yesterday, I was able to bring out the main reason why the seed on the pathway couldn’t grow and why it was the seed on good ground that could grow. In other words, I explained why the person with a heart as that of the pathway couldn’t make heads way with the word given and how it was the person with the good ground that could do so.

Today, I would take a look at the stony ground and explain what the good ground did differently to avoid becoming like the seed on the stony ground.

Just a quick peep from our scriptural passage for the good ground: Matthew 13:23 says, “But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, [grasps and comprehends it. AMP] who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” Mark 4:20 says, “But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, [receive and accepts and welcome it. AMP] and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” And last but not the least Luke 8:15 says, “But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience [hold it fast in a just (noble, virtuous) and worthy heart and steadily bring forth fruit with patience. AMP].”

As explained in three blogs before this, the seed on the stony ground represents that person who hears the word and is so excited about it, feels the word is so powerful, kind of like just admiring it but doing nothing with it. The stony ground could imply that person who gets back from a church service and you ask, “What was the Pastor say today?” and he replies, “Oh, you missed, the sermon was so powerful, I can’t even explain it”. I’ve heard several cases like that, but what happens after that, the excitement start to die off, because the word had no impact in the person’s life. Simple things like this make us miss the target!

On the other hand, what did the person as the good ground do differently? As the person with the good ground hears the word, he ensures he understands, grasps and comprehends what he heard. To do this, it is not by coming back from a church service (using the previous illustration) and just shouting how powerful the message is. The difference here would be in order to properly understand what was heard, he decided to take down notes, which he would go to his closet when he gets back home and dig into what he heard, just as the Bereans did in Acts 17:10-12. This is the only way he could understand the word!

Using a church service illustration doesn’t mean that is the only place you hear the word; you could hear the word through other ways God intends you to hear the word. And remember, the word is not like Jesus, the word is Jesus Himself. So being in form of the word would be Jesus coming in form of a mandate which is pressing at that time.

Next time, I would explain further what happened to the stony ground after this and what the good ground did differently.

Why not accept Jesus today if you haven’t. Pray out loud, “Jesus, I confess that You are my Lord and Saviour. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith in Your Word, I receive salvation now. Thank You for saving me!” Congratulations, you’re born again, you are now brand new!
