The Rock, the Sand and its True Meaning

I'm sure you've read about the parable of the house on the rock and the house on the sand. Jesus said that whoever hears His words and does them would be likened to the house on the rock. And whoever hears His words and doesn't do them would be likened to the house on the sand (Matthew 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49).

Both houses experienced the same events, but their ends differed, because of their foundation-the rock and the other sand.

I have written before that the words of Jesus have several meanings within them, and the foundations of these houses are not different, and that is what my focus is in this write-up.

The foundations of these houses represent our hearts, and by heart, I mean where we find true rest.

Romans 8, Apostle Paul wrote about being spiritually minded and being carnally minded. To be spiritually minded is life and peace, that is to be led by the Holy Spirit. And to be carnally minded is death, this means resting on your own abilities and wits alone, the fallen nature that is fazing out. This life is enmity with God because the foundations are of separate natures.

To rest on the words of Christ Jesus is to be spiritually minded, and this means your life has its foundation in Christ alone, which is the life on the rock because the rock represents Christ. This brings you life and peace. But if you rest your life on your abilities and wits alone, you are being carnally minded which is enmity with God, and it brings death, this is represented by the sand.

Both houses faced the same life issues, but one came out victorious, while the other crashed. Both houses faced rain, floods and winds it. This implies that being in Christ doesn't exempt you from trials in life, but it assures you of victory because only the house built on the rock stood firm.

As true Christians, we may go through situations that seem so tough. What we are to do is to remember the words of our Lord Jesus (which the Holy Spirit would help us in our shortcomings according to John 14:26), and rest on His words, and we would see ourselves come out of the situation victorious.

Remember, we are to live our life from victory, and not one trying to get it because we live from the victory of Christ Jesus, this is why we rest on His victorious words. The words of Jesus are alive and powerful, and most never forget that.

Our lives are meaningless and without purpose without Christ Jesus. We are like a headless chicken on its path to death without Christ Jesus. This is why Christ Jesus is the head of the church, where the church finds its true purpose, where you find your true purpose. He is the rock that our life is built on. Without Him, life is built on shaky ground, that is sand. Find Jesus, find your purpose.

Why not accept Jesus today if you haven’t. Pray out loud, “Jesus, I confess that You are my Lord and Saviour. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith in Your Word, I receive salvation now. Thank You for saving me!” Congratulations, you’re born again, you are now brand new!
