Do you have a job are you a student, or are you an apprentice under someone? I am sure you know that if you're in any of these categories, you're expected to give your best to see good results which could include promotion, better salaries and so on. But in all these, there is one thing to get the job and to get the job done with the right spirit—the Spirit of excellence.
When we walk with the Lord Jesus as Sons and Daughters of God, we are expected to do whatever we are called to do with an excellent spirit.
So, what is the excellent spirit?
From the standpoint of the ordinary man, it is a spirit of integrity and loyalty. This includes time management, punctuality, trust, your yes being your yes, and your no, being your no. Being morally upright no matter what.
But what does it mean from the standpoint of God?
Let us first get things clear, it is not our works that God sees that bring us excellence, but the spirit behind it.
The spirit of excellence is a spirit of faith, total rest in the finished works of our Lord Jesus Christ. James 2:26 says, "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
Faith without works is dead. What does this mean? To say something and do a thing contrary to what we said implies that our actions say the truth about where our heart truly lies. Likewise, if we say we have faith in a thing, it shows in our actions naturally without an effort. So, to say we believe all that Christ Jesus said in our health, is expected to show through our actions that we truly believe that by His stripes we were made healed. This is the spirit of excellence.
To say a person has an excellent spirit is to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit no matter what. And remember, the Holy Spirit knows all things and will teach us all things (ref.: John 14:26), and this includes living a life of integrity and loyalty in the word just as Christ was here on earth to God.
Daniel was a man of excellence because he lived his life in a way that pleased the Lord, by putting Him first before any other person or thing. His yes was his yes, and his no, no, just as Jesus asked us to live, in Matthew 5:37.
True Daniel got into some trouble because of his stand on justice. But the Lord was with him and brought him out of the mess (ref. Daniel 6). He occupied important positions under three different leadership while in Babylon (Kings Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, and Darius). He was constantly promoted because of his excellent spirit.
Joseph was another person who had an excellent spirit. From the time he was sold as a slave to Egypt, he prospered continuously because of his excellent spirit. He was made the overseer in the house of Potiphar while still a slave. When he was lied against that landed him in prison, the prison warder found favour with him and he made Joseph in charge of the prisoners. All these didn't just happen, but because of his excellent spirit that he flowed with because the Lord was with Him.
As Sons and Daughters of God, we are to live and walk by faith and not by sight. This is because we Spirit of Christ Jesus lives on the inside of us. So, as we are led by the Holy Spirit in line with the word of God, we live a life of excellence. But if we choose to do whatever we want we won't live in the Spirit of excellence.
God is the God of excellence, as Jesus showed forth while here on earth. Jesus made us understand that if we can only believe in Him and His finished works, we'll allow Him to flow out physically as we're being led by the Holy Spirit. This is because this is our real life now, and having an excellent spirit should be a normal thing.
