When we read the first three chapters of the book of Genesis, we find out where Adam ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But what would have happened if Adam ate from the tree of life?
As you know, God made a reference to two trees: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God specifically told Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but there was no mention of what would happen if Adam had taken from the tree of life?
Let’s take a look at the life of Jesus. Jesus is known as the second or last Adam, which would imply a new beginning. Jesus while on earth was just like Adam in Genesis; they both had the Spirit of God as the source of their existence. They both had to achieve something which they were created for. For Jesus, He had to die for the whole human race and overcome both the death and the devil, which He did. It was then that God raised Him and gave Him all authority in heaven, earth and under the earth [ref. Philippians 2:9-11]. Having the Spirit of God wasn’t enough because whatever happens to the “Adam” affects everyone coming behind them. They had to achieve the life of God Himself into them like adding two buckets water into one bucket, the water cannot be differentiated. This is what happens to us when we have eternal life.
Eternal life doesn’t mean living forever, if it meant living forever then everyone has eternal life! We are Spirit living in an earth suit and Spirit cannot die. Jesus told us what eternal life is in John 17:3, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” The term “know” has the exact meaning when it was said, “know” used in Genesis 4:1 “And Adam knew Eve his wife...” This was what would have happened to Adam if he ate from the tree of life. God is life personified and he (Adam) would have been exactly like God, in one sense we could say he would have been God!
Jesus achieved what Adam was to achieve and more. Jesus became God (looking from the perspective of Jesus as man), that is why when we accept Jesus as our life we become joint heirs with Him and as He is so we become [ref. Romans 8:17; 1 John 4:17].
Becoming a believer implies becoming fused with God. Jesus was given all authority which implies being God (fused to God’s existence); the same thing happens to you when you accept Jesus as Lord. This was what Adam would have gained if he ate of the tree of life. Remember, the tree symbolically represents Christ! God had and still has these planned for us, so why do worry when you have the command of the universe at your disposal. It’s all because of His love for us and this is the gospel truth.
Why not accept Jesus today if you haven’t. Pray out loud, “Jesus, I confess that You are my Lord and Saviour. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith in Your Word, I receive salvation now. Thank You for saving me!” Congratulations, you’re born again, you are now brand new!
