We look at Eve when reading our bible and wonder why she could fall for the trick of the serpent and more surprising when her husband, Adam was with her. This very act of Eve falling for the serpent still happens in today in some families, but in terms of having making the final decision in a family there is a standard which God created. So, let’s look at what went wrong in the Garden of Eden and what would have been done to prevent it.
In life, there are people we seek permission from before making an important decision. As a believer there are stages which must not be scattered. As an unmarried person, Jesus Christ is the direct head of the individual, although in some cases such seeking permission to marry, the parental head comes first before going to Christ especially if the parents are believers. It is important to note that as believers the sequence of those we seek must end up with God; because the head of an individual are the parents who answer to Jesus who answer to God. And of course God is the Prime Mover who answers to no one. This must not be broken or intercepted for another.
In the case of a married couple, the woman is expected to answer to her husband who is a believer, who answers to Christ, who then answers to God. It is like a tree which Jesus made us understand in John 15. He said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman... I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” (John 15: 1a, 5). Jesus made us understand that we are to abide in Him and without Him we can do nothing! This is very important for us today because if we think this area was referring to discipleship, you are right; but many of us don’t realise discipleship starts with the family. This was what Eve misplaced.
Now, when God created Adam, He gave him certain instructions such as be fruitful and multiply, subdue and overcome the earth and so on. He also said, “...Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Genesis 2:16b-17). Eve wasn’t created at this point. Therefore Adam was expected to pass the direct message to Eve.
When the serpent lured Eve to eat from tree of the knowledge of good and evil, she was expected to ask her husband if it was ok to eat the fruit. Her husband on the other hand was expected to ask God if it was ok. God on His part had answered Adam before the event which was stated in Genesis 2:16b-17. Then it was left to Adam to see if what the serpent to Eve corresponded with what God told him. Now Eve didn’t ask her husband if it was alright to eat the fruit and Adam himself didn’t stop her because it didn’t correspond with what God told him. So, once there is a mix up you miss your path.
The authority above you is very important; as a married woman, it is expected for the woman to ensure her husband follows every step of instruction that Christ tells him, or else it could destroy the family, that is why the woman is the help meet. The man on his part is expected obey the instruction he gets from God, pass down to the woman and ensure what is passed is adhered to (this is done in love and not with force). This is how the home is built.
1 Corinthians 11:3 explains everything, “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.” This standard has to be followed. God has made everything easy for us because of the love He has for us and this is the gospel truth.
Why not accept Jesus today if you haven’t. Pray out loud, “Jesus, I confess that You are my Lord and Saviour. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith in Your Word, I receive salvation now. Thank You for saving me!” Congratulations, you’re born again, you are now brand new!
